Business Insider: Dow jumps 285 points as traders try to extend comeback from big sell-off

August 7, 2024

U.S. stocks rose on Wednesday as traders aimed to extend Tuesday’s rally following the recent sell-off. The Bank of Japan’s decision to pause rate hikes bolstered investor sentiment, contributing to the positive movement in the markets.

All major indexes increased, with the Dow climbing over 300 points. The Bank of Japan’s guidance alleviated concerns about the unwinding of the carry trade, which had previously triggered a sell-off in global assets.

Michael Landsberg, CIO of Landsberg Bennett Private Wealth Management, a Punta Gorda-based wealth management firm, advised caution amidst the current market volatility.

He suggested that investors should avoid rushing into new investments, particularly in tech and industrial sectors, until the market stabilizes. Despite the recent uptick, Landsberg emphasized that heightened volatility may continue.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Market Rebound: U.S. stocks rallied on Wednesday, with all major indexes ticking higher, driven by positive sentiment following the Bank of Japan’s decision to pause rate hikes.
  2. Bank of Japan’s Impact: The central bank’s decision to halt rate increases eased investor concerns about the carry trade unwind, which had contributed to earlier market volatility.
  3. Cautious Investment Approach: Michael Landsberg advises investors to avoid rushing into new investments, particularly in tech and industrial sectors, due to ongoing market volatility. “With the VIX being as elevated as it is, we don’t think investors need to rush to put new money to work right now,” Landsberg noted.
  4. Continued Volatility Expected: Despite the recent rally, Landsberg and other analysts expect further volatility in the stock market, urging a cautious approach to investment decisions.
